"Twilight Conversations" is the title of the new project from the two jazzmen Franz Hellmüller (guitar) and Peter Zihlmann (piano). Intially the idea was to combine two instruments that normally don't play together, with the aim of creating a situation akin to chamber music. Just as the title says, "Twilight Conversations" aims at moving towards the limits of the musical zone, albeit discovering it. For this project "Limit zone" means therefore to break with the traditional schemes. The absence of bass and drum provokes a unique challenge that, at the same time, has a liberating effect and enables these two instruments to express all their potential. For the two musicans many new possibilities arise, because both instruments may be played as accompanying or solo instruments. The guitar and the piano blend well together, with the one playing solo over the other, and vice-versa, or neither of both or even both soloing together. The atmosphere thus created varies from introspective to melancholic landscapes, as well as intense collective improvisations. It is very difficult to categorize the compositions of these two brilliant musicians, since they move easily among jazz, folk and traditional music. Melody however is the central point of all compositions and is the element that pulls everything together and allows them to be altogether simple and comprehensible. The melodic line is therefore the basis for the improvisation and develops like a form of dialogue between the musicians and their instruments, the result and direction of which remain open and indefinite, ergo: "Twilight Conversations".
