A unique combination of two cutting-edge British musicians and a Siberian shaman - one of the most astounding performers of the music of Tuva, and master of the Kaargiraa throat-singing style.
While Gendos Chamzyryn comes directly from the tradition, Tim Hodgkinson and Ken Hyder have been exploring shamanic music through field trips to Siberia since 1990.
Because of the particular individual backgrounds of each member, K-Space sounds nothing like any of the overtone-singing bands to have come out of Tuva in the past 10 years. These have generally performed the folk songs of Tuva, or adaptations of them, whereas K-Space is about the wilder shamanic element in Tuvan culture - the undercurrent of energy that Chamzyryn is always reaching for in his music.
The scope of K-Space is enormous. At times it can sound like a kind of folk music you've never heard before. At other times it can remind you of a powerful rock experience underpinned by Chamzyryn's drive on the "Dungur" shaman's drum. In all cases, the ethnic dimension of K- Space music is present on the molecular level rather than as syntax or reference.
