Biography of Mike Hext

Mike came to prominence winning the first ever BBC TV Young Musician Of The Year Competition in 1978 and has since led a versatile career as a trombonist, valve trombonist and composer/arranger.

He has been in demand as a jazz and studio musician. He began his jazz career with The National Youth Jazz Orchestra and has since worked regularly with Stan Sulzmann, Tina May, Guy Barker, Mark Lockheart, John Parricelli, Gwilym Simcock, Alan Barnes, Andy Panayi, Steve Waterman, James Watson, Mark Nightingale, Malcolm Edmonstone, Martin Shaw, Alex Dankworth, Henry Lowther and Julian Joseph amongst others. In 2006 he was featured in BBC Radio 3's Jazz Line Up performing the music of Mark Lockheart and Richard Rodney Bennett.

He has recorded two jazz albums on the Mainstem label. His first album, 'Menagerie' was recorded in 2006 and received much critical acclaim. The second, 'Mr OK' is a valve trombone album and was released in 2008 also to critical acclaim.

As a studio musician he has played on a significant number of film soundtracks including The Mission, Gladiator, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Bridget Jones, The Fifth Element, Shrek and The Golden Compass. He has recorded with a number of artists including Joni Mitchell, Elton John, Bryan Adams, Mariah Carey, Tom Jones, Paul McCartney, Julio Iglesias, Cliff Richard, Jarvis Cocker, Missy Elliott, Englebert Humperdinck, Elkie Brooks, Kylie Minogue and Oscar winning film composer and pianist Stephen Warbeck.

As an orchestral musician he has held Principal Trombone positions with the Halle Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House Covent Garden. As a chamber player he has been a member of the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble and the contemporary music group the Fires of London. He has had pieces written for him including a concerto by the English composer Edward Gregson published by Novello.

He is also active as a composer and arranger. His compositions have been performed and recorded extensively and in 2003 he composed the soundtrack to the film Hunters of the Lost Sun. He has also been a Professor of Trombone at the Royal Academy and the Royal College of Music.
