13/03/2007 Julian Siegel | The first thing that strikes me about this record is its really warm sound and feel. I love the way the compositions each have their space and seem really played in by the band, ......nothing's rushed and the music has a great sense of breathing space and considerable poise.Sara Littlefield has a real individual voice on the tenor, her sound is packed with warmth and soulfulness in the real sense, but with all of the daring and unexpected turn of phrase of any great improviser. This is a great debut. This record has a real atmosphere created by the tender, playful and searching compositions of Sara's Father Ron, they are lovingly performed here by this accomplished quartet and this record is a great tribute to his music and memory. The last Track on the CD, 'Thomas the toad' is a really beautiful piece of solo piano music performed by Ron Littlefield. | 05/03/2007 Grimsby Jazz | In a proliferation of female saxophonists Sara Littlefield is anotherone with a bright future. She has a light flexible sound with a swinging feel. On some tracks there is an E.C.M. mood which isprobably due to pianist Jamil Sheriffs liking for Keith Jarrett. Theinterplay between him and Sara reminds me very much of an early E.C.M.record, "Belonging" by Keith Jarrett and Saxophonist Jan Gabarek. Saradoes justice to some excellent tunes composed by her father, RonLittlefield. Grimsby Jazz looks forward to presenting this band liveat some time in the future. |
