"Shake" is the debut album from Loose Juice, an explosive instrumental jazz/funk quartet from Cambridge UK who's music appeals to jazz connaisseurs and funk fanatics alike. The album is full of complex arrangements,catchy melodies and virtuoso musicianship. There's a few mellow moments in amongst the manic energy whilst the jazz/funk feel is augmented by subtle Brazilian tinges, influenced by the band's Brazilian bassist and chief songwriter, Tiago Coimbra. There's some stunning solo performances throughout the album with Coimbra, Rick Hudson (drums), Justin Dwyer (guitar) and Josh Ison (sax), along with guest player Neil Waters (trumpet) taking turns to demonstrate their exceptional talent but without over-extending the solos. Highlights include the slap-bass drenched "Hype," the beautiful "The Mermaid" and the manic, guitar driven and appropriately named "Happy Times."

Maybe east anglia based Quintet Loose Juice were being ironic when they named there band but their blend of funk, jazz and Brazilian music sounds tight enough to me.The rhythm team of drummer Rick Hudson the bassist Tiago Coimbra lock in from the opening medium funk of 'Shake' to the more up tempo closer 'Down with it' while the Brazilian flavored 'Lovely' and the more laid back groove of 'Mermaid' add contrast to the predominantly funk material. An enjoyable debut.
