The title track, 8.00 am, is an original composition by Viv Rodd with lyrics by Kris Gayle. There are selections by Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Bill Evans, Cannonball Adderley, Ray Brown and Leonard Feather. Add in some great standards by Jerome Kern, Rodgers and Hart and Michel Legrand, and a rarely heard jazz waltz, and the end result is an album of great variety and musicality.
In her live performances Kris Gayle has an understated but magnetic way with slow tunes, telling a story which really draws the listener in. Taking advantage of Viv Rodd’s orchestrations, creating a lush backdrop for Kris’s voice, adding some of the finest jazz instrumentalists in the South West, producer Damian Rodd has captured that quality in this recording. |
