Biography of Paul Smail

I was born in Withernsea, East Yorkshire in 1954. I began playing classical piano and followed the traditional pattern of piano grades until the age of 17 when I started playing blues and jazz. I also learned cnurch organ and was the organist and choirmaster at Patrington, E. Yorks for 3 years (15-18) until going to law school in Nottingham. I have recoreded and played with a wide variety of musicians and styles across the country. I have recorded 3 cds of original material prior to 'Red Boats'. I have composed around 50 pieces of music.
I have been influenced by musicians and composers from a range of styles and time periods.These include JS Bach, Grieg, Chopin, the Fania Allstars, Joe Sample,Jeff Beck,Chick Corea, Bob James, David Sanborn, and recently converted to Didier Squiban and EST. The real list is too extensive and increasing all the time!!
Regarding 'Red Boats ..'I have found the whole experience of recordong and mixing this album exhilarating. My contribution, in retrospect , has 'caught me by surprise'. I have had the unique experience of being able to play and improvise without the restrictions of the usual group format, ie a constraining rhythm section.
The duo,with Dave's unique feel for the guitar, has enabled me to experiment in a live setting. I think that 'the bar' has been raised for us both by this musical excursion.
