Biography of Iain Mackenzie
Straight from the ‘Cool School’ of Chet Baker, Mel Tormé & Nat Cole comes the stylish, smooth swinging voice of Iain Mackenzie. Twice on Sunday is the debut album from this experienced North London singer, who began his jazz training at Leeds College of Music & the Guildhall School of Music. Iain is a singer in high demand, and can be found performing with various bands, Big Bands and Vocal Groups including NYJO, The BBC Big Band, Voxtet, The New London Jazz Voices and perhaps most notably at Berlin Jazz Festival with Kenny Wheeler & Norma Winston. The album is a refreshing selection of Swing and Jazz standards including hip new arrangements of ‘Angel Eyes’, ‘Sugar’, I’ve Got You Under My Skin’ and, of course, ‘Sunday’ (twice!), There’s a welcome appearance from Stevie Wonder’s seldom performed classic ‘If It’s Magic’ and original lyrics for Clare Fisher ‘s beautiful ‘Pensativa’. Johannes Strauss gets an airing with ‘Poppy Day’, an affecting introspective adaptation of ‘The Blue Danube’. All this is brought together by a truly great band that need no introduction – Pete Churchill, Simon Thorpe, Troy Miller & Pete Wareham. The sound is relaxed, understated, Cool and swinging.
