KAREN LANE RELEASES BEAUTIFUL LOVE – HER FOURTH ALBUM ON THE NEW PURELY DIGITAL ARM OF JAZZIZIT RECORDS – SMASH DIGITAL. BEAUTIFUL LOVE ALBUM LAUNCH SUNDAY 24th MAY – PIZZA EXPRESS DEAN STREET, LONDON W1
"A stylish and elegant singer." NME "Sensually funky and soulful" Jazz UK
After a three year break from the London jazz scene singer Karen Lane is back with her new album BEAUTIFUL LOVE accompanied by a world class band including UK greats Tom Cawley (piano), Andy Hamill (bass), Nic France (drums), with exciting French saxophonist Robin Fincker ( Blink , Outhouse) who has now made London his home along with Australian jazz violinist Julian Ferraretto and guitarist Dave Colton.
BEAUTIFUL LOVE features twelve beautifully crafted standards. Classics such as I thought about You, We’ll be together Again, Mood Indigo and Angel Eyes see Karen taking a new studio direction.
“On my previous recordings Once in a Lifetime (2002) and Taste (2005) I went into the studio with very specific arrangements, on these songs I took a new approach giving myself and my musicians the freedom to interpret these classic songs. Having worked together consistently for the past few years, gave us that instinctive sense to explore them with true spontaneity” says Karen.
Other tracks such as the spritely Day in Day out and the funky title track Beautiful Love, Softly as in a Morning Sunrise and Feeling Good have been given Karen’s groove and bass driven counterpoint arrangements. These tunes not only showcase her superb vocal talents, but also her skills as a talented musical arranger and producer.
In contrast, Karen has a rare gift to be able to deliver a Bossa Nova with the intimacy and understatement of only a few singers - her delivery has been likened to Astrid Gilberto for its distinctively sensuous sound and style. BEAUTIFUL LOVE does not disappoint and features two classic Bossa Novas - Meditation and a deliciously smultchzy - More.
Karen may have been off the local UK scene but she has been continuing to tour around the globe with her regular band of musicians, including performances in France, Berlin, Bucharest, Monaco, Cannes, Italy and South Africa. She was also invited to perform concerts with The Brass Group in Palermo, Sicily.
Described as having “a rare combination of musicianship, technique and just plain feel” when she was first introduced on previous recordings, Lane is a singer comfortable with any style. A deeper look at her albums will reveal her as an accomplished songwriter who has been admired for her clever arrangements of tired old standards. On BEAUTIFUL LOVE Karen proves she has the ablility to recreate the standard repertoire in her own unique way. This is the mark of a great singer.
