New Sax of Gold album has the Midas touch
ANDY Scott's SaxAssault are proving a valuable commodity with their latest album release Sax of Gold.
The 13-piece band, which features some of the best saxophonists in the country, has produced a new CD that is worth its weight in gold.
The CD, due to be released on March 1, features eight original compositions by talented musician Andy Scott, who also leads the band.
And when it comes to music Andy has the Midas touch: he recently clinched a coveted British Composer Award, in association with BBC Radio Three.
The new CD also includes guest appearances from US sax star Bob Mintzer (Yellowjackets) and piano sensation and BBC New Generation Artist Gwilym Simcock.
Commenting on the album launch, Andy Scott said: I'm delighted Bob agreed to guest on this CD as he has been such an inspiration to work with, and he is undoubtedly one of the best saxophonists in the world.
Gwilym was a sensation when he appeared with SaxAssault in 2005, so I wrote a special duo feature for him and Rob Buckland.
I feel this CD is really reflective of where the band is at right now, and I'm very proud to work with such amazing musicians.
SaxAssault is embarking on a seven-date UK tour to promote the new album.
The band's tour stretches from North Yorkshire to Devon and includes venues such as, Pizza on the Park in London, The Stables in Milton Keynes, The Sands, in Gainsborough, and Life Cafe, in Manchester, where Bob Mintzer will also be appearing with the band.
Andy Scott's SaxAssault features no less than nine saxophones from sopranino to bass, backed by grooves from a four piece rhythm section - keyboards, bass, drums and percussion.
All the players are highly respected in their fields, appearing regularly with the likes of Supertramp, Duran Duran, Jamie Cullum, The BBC Big Band, Halle Orchestra, Michael Nyman Band, Shirley Bassey and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra.
During the tour they will be performing compositions from the new album which combines their talents as some of the best saxophonists from jazz, pop and classical genres.
At many of the concerts the group will be offering opportunities for young budding sax players to work closely with them as they provide a series of afternoon workshops.
The children will be involved in a piece specially written by Andy called 'Metal Shapes' and the climax of the workshops will be a massed saxophone performance involving up to 60 saxophones!
