MARTIN SPEAKE'S CHANGE OF HEART FEATURING BOBO STENSON
Martin Speake (alto saxophone) Bobo Stenson (piano) Steve Watts (bass) Jeff Williams (drums)
Having worked with the likes of Sam Rivers, Stan Tracey and Django Bates, Martin Speake is a sought-after saxophonist of extraordinary lyricism and dexterity. His beautifully-crafted 2006 CD Change of Heart (ECM), led Jazz Times magazine to hail him as one of the most interesting and rewarding alto saxophonists now playing jazz on any continent. This tour sees Speake reunited with one of his collaborators on the album, Swedish piano master Bobo Stenson, in an international line-up. Stenson has been one of Europe's most highly esteemed jazz artists since the 1960s. Early in his playing career he accompanied a long line of visiting American players including Sonny Rollins, Stan Getz and Gary Burton before striking out on his own and recording for ECM with the likes of Jan Garbarek, Charles Lloyd and Tomasz Stanko. Steve Watts' experience includes work with the cream of British jazz musicians such as Iain Ballamy, Julian Arguelles and Christine Tobin. Jeff Williams was a member of the Stan Getz Quartet in the early 70s and since then has performed with a host of jazz names including Lee Konitz, Joe Lovano and Paul Bley.
Duncan Hopkins replaces Steve Watts on bass for the 23rd and 24th dates.
The group are also playing live and being interviewed on BBC Radio 3 on In Tune at 5pm on the 24th January.
