WIND SHADOWS LAUNCH & TOUR 2009 TONY WOODS PROJECT "WIND SHADOWS"
The TWP will release its long-awaited third album "Wind Shadows" in June 2009. The Project's second highly-acclaimed album "Lowlands" (4 stars in the Guardian), featured quirky, distinctly folk-infused compositions by band leader Tony Woods. Although still retaining its folk flavours, "Wind Shadows" sees the Project steer a different course, bringing a more rocky, edgy slant.
The personnel remains the same as on the previous album, pulling together the talents of five very individual musicians. The wonderful Mike Outram is featured on guitar, sending the music to new, rocky heights. Rob Millett provides beautiful harmonic and melodic back-drops and contributes exciting solos on vibes and marimba. Double bassist Andy Hamill and drummer Milo Fell supply a creative, supple groove that is at times driving, at times delicate and textural. The Project is led by the "superlative saxophonist" (Ian Carr) and composer Tony Woods.
In this folk/world music/jazz/rock-influenced band's new album, expect an exciting, eclectic mix of luscious harmonies, light, lyrical lines and hard-hitting grooves.
The Tony Woods Project is launching its new album "Wind Shadows" at the Pizza Express on June 9th 2009 and is touring with the support of Jazz Services in July and through the autumn. Plans are already under way for a Spring Tour 2010. The Project plays its own brand of melodic, accessible, original, folk/rock/world influenced jazz. The second album "Lowlands" (Basho)received four stars from John Fordham writing in the Guardian ( "full of surprises"). He loved the band so much he turned up at our gig at Lauderdale House, and reviewed that gig in the Guardian and Jazz uk ("as punchy as they come..."). The album has had several air plays on radio: BBC - Jazz Record Requests ("combines a jazz edge with the melodic zest of folk"..."delightful-a romping country dance with a contemporary urban flair"-Geoffrey Smith), Jazz Line Up and Jazz FM. We have performed at many London venues including the Vortex, Pizza Express Dean Street, 606 Club, the Front Room QEH South Bank Centre, the Crypt and at festivals such as Manchester, Swanage, Teignmouth, Richmond, Ascot, Ealing. The music is contemporary yet tuneful, catchy yet sophisticated. According to Claire Hadaway of Jazz Views the music is "contemplative without being soporific & innnovative whilst still being accessible & listenable." The band features myself on saxes, Mike Outram on guitar, Rob Millet on vibes, Andy Hamill on bass, Milo Fell on drums. ****STOP PRESS **** " ...And what I like above all about Woods' music are those moments when a door is suddenly opened, and unexpected fresh air, the outdoors, nature, or even anarchy get invited in."
