News.....

Hi

I'm about to start writing music for a quartet tour with John Abercrombie, Michael Formanek and Tom Rainey. The tour will be throughout Scotland (Scottish Arts Council Tune Up Tour) plus a couple of gigs in England. I've just finished a trio tour of the UK and Ireland with Tom and Michael which was, unsurprisingly, a lot of fun, and we are planning on a recording in New York in April, the resulting CD will be released later in the year or early next year on Clean Feed records.

Talking of CDs, I have just released a solo CD, its called 'Inner Voices' and was released in January on the Portuguese label Tone Of A Pitch Records. It is a companion to an earlier CD called 'Scapes' that was mainly a solo CD. The music includes some totally improvised tracks as well as some arranged/planned tracks. It also includes something that I've been calling 'saxophone percussion', namely me hitting and scraping parts of the saxophone or reeds etc and recording them in a certain way to give a rhythmic texture. The radio station lent me a good mic and I recorded it at nights after HR gigs and rehearsals, I'm pleased with the results.

I recorded some big band music with the Radio Big Band Frankfurt, featuring Gwilym Simcock, last year and this will be released as a CD with the UK label Basho, this will be released at the same time as the quartet tour with John Abercrombie.

Fuzzymoon music have recently uploaded some of my recent big band music and some of the 'orchestral' music from my 'As above so below' CD for download.

If anyone is interested in getting hold of any other music of mine to play with their groups or just to see what's going on please email me at. Jarguelles@tiscali.co.uk

Itunes currently have 3 CDs ready for download, Scapes, Skull View and Escapade. others will hopefully be added soon. If you want to download a track open itunes, click on itunes store and then do a search for Arguelles (there aren't many of us). There are also some video clips of a trio with Jim Black and Ronan Guilfoyle on youtube.

Thanks

Projects

Hi

I have just finished a solo CD, its called 'Inner Voices' and it will be released in January on the Portuguese label Tone Of A Pitch Records. It will be a companion to an earlier CD called 'Scapes' that was mainly a solo CD. The musit will include some totally improvised tracks as well as some arranged/planned tracks. The radio station lent me a good mic and I recorded it at nights after HR gigs and rehearsals, I'm pleased with the results.

To coincide with this CD release I have a trio tour with Michael Formanek and Tom Rainey, we have 9 concerts in England, Wales and Ireland, you can see the complete list on my dates page.

In May 2008 the HR Big Band in Frankfurt, Germany performed and recorded 2 hours of new music that I wrote for them, its being mixed in November and a CD will be released next spring on Basho Records.

To coincide with the Big Band CD release, the trio, with Mike and Tom will again be touring this time with John Abercrombie as a guest. This tour is a Scottish Arts Council Tune Up Tour. The dates are being finalised and of course it's going to be mainly in Scotland

I am still working with the HR Big Band, it is one of the German Radio Big bands, it's also one of the few full time jazz 'jobs', that I know about, in the world. The band has several concerts each month, but it mainly rehearses and records for the radio. I have an apartment in Frankfurt and I commute between Scotland (my home) and Germany. The job is flexible so I can take time off when I have other projects I want to do. If you look at my 'dates' page you'll see all the stuff I do away from the HR Big Band.

Fuzzymoon music have recently uploaded some of my recent big band music and some of the 'orchestral' music from my 'As above so below' CD for download.

OCTOBER TOUR LIAM NOBLE AND JULIAN ARGUELLES DOUBLE BILL

This tour will promote two albums – Liam Noble’s Romance Amongst the Fishes (SRCD13-2), released on Basho Records and launched at the Purcell Room in London at the 2005 London Jazz Festival, and Julian Arguelles’s Partita (SRCD 17-2) released this autumn.

Both albums were recorded in New York and continue a constant theme at Basho of collaborations between British and North American players. Liam Noble’s Romance Among the Fishes, recorded in August 2004 (with Phil Robson, Drew Gress and Tom Rainey), came out of a commission for the 2004 Cheltenham Jazz Festival. The music demonstrates Liam Noble’s highly original approach to composition. Tom Rainey’s highly original percussive style and Drew Gress’s virtuosic and responsive bass playing were Liam’s inspiration for the work. With his long-term associate guitarist Phil Robson, whose versatility complements Liam’s inventiveness as an improvising pianist, the quartet have created pieces that demonstrate a strong musical empathy between players whose backgrounds and influences are very diverse. The music has developed a style and energy of its own since its original airing at the Cheltenham Festival where John Fordham described it in the following way:
'The sharp-end American bass/drums duo of New York downtowners Drew Gress and Tom Rainey were mixed into another cocktail on Monday, playing the music of the British pianist Liam Noble, with Phil Robson on guitar...the percussively algebraic finale Jitters brought inventive collective jittering of a clarity, focus and density that sounded like the music of regular partners'. John Fordham, The Guardian
