More Polar Bear

More Polar Bear This autumn the group is due support polar bear at the point in cardiff bay. Maybe they liked our last support slot, with sound engineer. Or perhaps it's because Rich looks a little bit like an eskimo (charles bronson style).

WJCO Tour

WJCO Tour Richard, Chris and Mark have recently been on tour with the Wales Jazz Composers Orchestra. The seventeen piece Group features lots of leading figures on the Welsh Jazz scene, such as Huw Warren, Paula Gardiner, Lee Goodall and Li Hardin. The band plays an eclectic mix of original compositions written by band members. Richard Jones has contributed two pieces including a big band scoring of Turn Turtle, which also appears on our first album. The tour, funded by the Arts Council of Wales, concludes in Theater Bryncieniog, Brecon on the 30th of May.

Prsf Award

Prsf Award Paul has been awarded a fat commission to write an extended work for the Wales Jazz Composers Orchestra, and to be its composer in residence. The piece, entitled In Syllables, will be premiered at the HSBC Brecon Jazz Festival, and is the first large-scale work commissioned for the WJCO.
In Syllables features a whole host of mad ideas and a number of structures not readily associated with jazz, including, at one point, a fugue. Paul says that: “For the WJCO, I wanted to use these styles to combine formal composition with improvisation and to emphasis the way in which jazz is all about group interaction within a given framework." It also includes the word blesinsyla- so watch out!!

New CD

New CD During the last year we have been busy writing and demoing new compositions for our next album. The material has already been slowly fed into the set and we are currently finalising details of the release with an independent record label. A full studio album is expected to be available in early autumn.

Polar Bear

Paul and Richard recently supported the fantastic Polar Bear at a packed out gig in Cardiff University, with their improvisation group 'Sound Engineer'. A merry time was had by all and we also got to see the amazing London based group in close up action. Our line up featured Paul, Richard and Drummer Avvon Chambers, along with guest improvisers Matthew Lovett (Bass) and Deri Roberts (Saxes/Trombone). It was pretty mental playing hardcore improvisation to a huge audience of students, but they dug it like a ditch (or something).
