Exciting week

I had a very nice week last week. Two nights at Ronnie Scotts supporting Billy Cobham and then a review in the Guardian on Friday.
All for the new album that’s just come out with fellow guitarist Kathy Dyson – Emily Remembered.
I've also just got my visa for China. Going there in April.
Kathy and I thought we could go there and play jazz versions of 80's tunes - Wake me up before you go go?
WARNING: ONE SENTENCE IN THIS POSTING IS A LIE.

New album recording

I'll be recording a new album with fellow guitarist Kathy Dyson. Our Vortex gig on Thursday April 8th will form the basis for most of it. JazzCD followers can get 20% off door admission by mentioning they're there to create audience ambience... Not too much noise at the back please!

Are you experienced?

Hope to see some of you at the margate jazz big sky festival next weekend. I'm playing on Sunday 26 July 3pm with LakaD & Diane McLoughlin.
Also I've just come back from the US where i studied with guru Mick Goodrick. Great week and I've got masses of material and ideas that I'd like to work on over the summer. Would any guitarists be interested in working through some of the material with me? I'd like to meet up maybe once a week. I'm based in east London. Voicings combined with rhythm work and some aural training exercises.

Album prices slashed

Well I've reduced all my CDs my 1p. Yes if our MPs can lead the way in this time of financial crisis then musicians can also be relied upon to do their bit!
All my albums including my latest Tune Up Turn On Stretch Out will be £11.99

Touring with double bill

I've had some very enjoyable gigs in the past two weeks in Newcastle, Wakefield, Nottingham and Sheffield with a double bill featuring my group and the guitar duo Emily Remembered. Recent review http://lance-bebopspokenhere.blogspot.com/2009/04/remembering-emily-kathy-dyson-deirdre.html
Emily Remembered plus Alison Rayner (bass) and Kenrick Rowe (drums) will be playing at the Vortex on Thurs 21 May. My latest group album Tune up Turn on Stretch Out (TUTOSO) is now on Jazzcds - it's only taken me a year...

‘ Tune Up Turn On Stretch Out ‘Tour

Deirdre Cartwright
embarks on a series of live dates to support the release of her latest album ‘Tune Up Turn On Stretch Out’ released to a sell out crowd at the Pizza Express Soho in February earlier this year.

‘If there is a more complete guitarist in contemporary music than Deirdre Cartwright I'd like to know who it is.’ Dave Gelly The Observer April 2008

‘Her sinewy guitar fronts a sparse trio - with beatnik spoken-word injections from Sarah P - who stretch out like a psychedelic 1960s blues band, but take the blind leaps of faith of improvisers. Highlights are the Nirvana grunge-fusion Smells Like Jazz and a sublime exploration of Kate Bush’s Wuthering Heights.’
Stewart Lee The Sunday Times May 2008

NEW ALBUM: 'Tune Up Turn On Stretch Out'

I've finally got my new website up and running and I have a new album released Feb 2008. 'Tune Up Turn On Stretch Out' was recorded live at the Vortex and features Deirdre Cartwright guitar Alison Rayner bass Buster Birch drums and Sarah P vocals.
The album has been played on Radio 2, thejazz digital, Radio Scotland and there's a launch party Monday 18 Feb at Pizza Express Soho. So why not 'Turn Up' (groan)
“ Cartwright is as adept at the funky shuffle somewhat reminiscent of Grant Green as harder-edged, multi-textured playing, and her compositions draw on everything from 1970s fusion to grunge music and the straightahead jazz of the likes of George Benson and Wes Montgomery, but it is the unpretentious zestfulness of her approach, her clear enjoyment of the sheer variety of sounds her guitar can be made to produce, that is so infectious and which makes her playing so listenable.” Chris Parker, reviewing for the Vortex

DEIRDRE CARTWRIGHT GROUP UK TOUR

For this tour Cartwright and her long time collaborator Alison Rayner on bass are playing with new drummer and percussionist Buster Birch.
This imaginative and freewheeling trio are joined by jazz poet and vocalist Sarah P.

London born guitarist and composer, who became well known by presenting the BBC’s ground breaking series Rockschool (the original!).
She was described in The Guardian as “a melodic, funky and hard swinging guitarist” and the group in Musician magazine
as ‘Intensely hip, groovy, accessible and atmospheric. Get out and see them’

Her live set can include 70’s fusion, loose limbed funk, classic jazz takes on pop covers as well as more straight ahead jazz,
with the addition of spoken word and vocals on some numbers.

“She is a most remarkable musician, having an apparently effortless command of the instrument” The Observer
