Following a successful run at Fringe 2009, London based jazz vocalist Kerry Hodgkin returns to the award winning Jazz Bar for Fringe 2010 in a perfect synergy of artiste and venue. For five nights only Kerry will be performing songs from her eagerly awaited great new album Table in the Corner, released on 33 Jazz Records in November 2009.
Kerry made a welcome return to the forefront of the UK jazz scene in 2009 with this fantastic new album produced by award winning vocalist Ian Shaw and featuring some of the cream of UK jazz, including Alan Barnes (sax/clarinet), Janette Mason (piano) and Mark Fletcher (drums).
Kerry’s silk-and-steel vocals have been likened to jazz legend Sheila Jordan and diva Eva Cassidy! With a blend of contemporary jazz/soul/latin/blues originals and covers, expect a varied programme. This will include some of Kerry’s own compositions, along with original takes on material as diverse as Randy Newman, Rodgers & Hart, Billy Bragg, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Arlen & Mercer, Sondheim & Bernstein and talented folk/blues duo Hensley & Wright. Interpretations include arrangements by Ian Shaw, celebrated jazz drummer Clark Tracey, rising star pianist/composer Janette Mason and Hodgkin herself.
Kerry has been a professional jazz, blues and soul singer for well over a decade. Her training as an actress brings with it an extraordinary ability to interpret lyrics, which, added to Kerry’s innate musicality and exceptional vocal range, makes her an outstanding vocalist and performer. She is at once at home in the current UK jazz landscape, but with an accessibility capable of reaching across musical borders.
Kerry has family living just outside Edinburgh and featured at The Jazz Bar for the first time in May 2009. Her local connections allow her to appear at the Fringe with some of the best jazz talent that Scotland has to offer. The Quartet of musicians includes Scotland’s answer to Chet Baker, the amazing Colin Steele on trumpet and, fresh from his time working in New York, Edinburgh’s own rising star pianist Paul Kirby.
