Reviews of Luke Annesley
21/03/2005 Trudie Squires | “An impressive Nottingham debut for this quartet with an exceptionally vibrant and melodic approach to its jazz. The group’s sound was crisp and fresh, playing intricate arrangements with precision and clarity. Leader and alto saxophonist Luke Annesley played with a cool, pure tone, combining bebop complexity with diverse rhythmic accents and rich harmonies. His chief front-line collaborator was superb guitarist Dave Cliff, a natural improviser who built his solos with warm flowing lines, paying careful attention to their overall symmetry. The deftness with which the two wove and entwined their lines, aided by the impeccable match of their tones was truly remarkable and produced some wonderfully warm sounds…” | 28/03/0005 James Griffiths | “…a touch of bluesy Hank Mobley poignancy, a dash of Art Pepper’s introversion and more than a little of Lester Young’s whistling postman insouciance… bustled long like a 1940s Charlie Parker session… ingeniously arranged… beautifully played ballad… a well played set with some agreeable twists and turns” *** Guardian
