Reviews of Janet Penfold
01/10/2008 Bruce Crowther - Jazz Journal | An Attractive debut from a new singer who has an easy, unforced way with the songs she sings. Her range is not wide but she works well with the material. The charts are interesting and refresh the familiar songs. They are the work of the pianist, who is also commendable for his backing to the singer and his solos. Solid support from bassist and drummer, the latter especially on 'Puttin' on the Ritz' on which he is featured. Nash (Derek) takes his solos with expected flair and adds to the date's jazz qualities. In Browne's one appearance he brings an earthy sound to the proceedings. There is also an earthily attractive sound to Penfold's voice, which does not hear display a wide range but she does very well within it..... Whatever course she takes, I look forward to hearing more from her, I understand that Penfold is based in London but should she appear in your part of the UK she is very worthy of the admission price to one of her gigs. ....... I expect that this is also where you would be able to buy this rather good and very promising CD. |
