Reviews of Sam Hogarth

After the main concert came the first in a planned series of short late-night performances at the Royal Concert Hall, this one featuring jazz pianist Sam Hogarth. As well as a couple of standards, by Gershwin and Bernstein, he gave us his very inventive takes on Prokofiev's 'Montagues and Capulets' and the Ravel concerto. He even managed to graft a characteristic chord progression from the Ravel first movement onto the opening of 'I Got Rhythm'. Uri Caine, you've got competition.

First to park his prodigiously talented glutes on the piano stool was 24 year-old Sam Hogarth, currently studying for a masters degree in Musicology at Oxford. Sam opened with Thelonious Monk’s Straight, No Chaser, a bold choice methought, suspecting that a more technical approach (think McCoy Tyner or Ahmed Jamal) would most impress the four judges. Sam’s performance included a stride piano piece and a free jazz composition of his own, before ending with a dainty ballad and a bluesy number, all played with consummate precision, grace and aplomb. |
