Reviews of Terri Quaye
01/01/2010 Keith Wise | If I could give more than 5 stars for this exemplary example of the vocal art I would do so. Beautifully recorded. Crystal clear diction. Original material. The album has a reflective quality and gives on listening a reminder of a kinder simpler time. Buy it you will not be disappointed. Bravo Terri. More please. Keith Wise. West End cocktail bar pianists are a dying breed. In the thirties and forties, the singer and pianist Hutch - Leslie A Hutchinson - was the darling of London's smart set, playing nightly at his own club and famously mopping his brow with his handkerchief as he sang. His handsome looks, lazy sophisticated and unique creamy voice really did add up to something special.
In the sixties and seventies you could hear the veteran revue entertainer Billy Milton play everything from Cole Porter to Gershwin at the piano at the Chesterfield Hotel, just off Berkeley Square.
Nowadays piano and sophisticated cocktail bars are few and far between. Fortunately the hugely talented jazz singer, composer and pianist Terri Quaye is on hand to entertain customers nightly at London's Meridien Hotel in the heart of Piccadilly. Her own programme consists of songs from Ella Fitzgerald, Nat 'King'Cole, Frank Sinatra, Noel Coward, Cole Porter and many others and she often does requests. "I have a huge repertoire" she says."If a guest says, 'May I hear...? I'm there right away.
Quaye has worked internationally and starred in jazz festivals in Rome, Poland and New Zealand as well as concerts in New York, Paris and Washington. She also launched London's first all-women jazz quartet Moon Spirit which received critical acclaim. In 1980-2 she was artist in residence at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC.
No stranger to the theatre, Quaye has worked as an MD and pianist on West End musicals such as 'Catch My Soul' , making numerous recordings.
A glamorous fixture at the Meridien, she is popular with both young and older guests. "Every evening is a fresh challenge for me", she says. "Often a face conjures up a tune in my mind". |
