Reviews of Georgia Mancio
08/03/2008 John Fordham, The Guardian | “A performer of character, conviction, and relaxed virtuosity…an inventive straight-ahead improviser… Mancio’s music sounds both purposeful and chilled at the same time… [She] has occupied the fringes for a few years without quite finding the spotlight, but she sounds more than ready for it now.”
| 04/03/2008 Jack Massarik, The Evening Standard | “Her voice is sweet and small but she has learned to slip it across with the lethal cool of a Mafioso stiletto… [and] a gravitas that recalled … Chet Baker and Georgie Fame….Georgia Mancio left the crowd begging for more."
| 10/10/2007 Chris Parker, The Vortex Website | "Anyone who's heard the debut album by singer Georgia Mancio, Peaceful Place, will not be surprised to hear that she delighted a respectably sized Monday-night audience with a cleverly paced selection of intelligently reworked standards, affecting originals and the odd samba. What was slightly unexpected – given the tasteful restraint that characterises said recording – was the sheer power of her voice and the intimate charm of her stage presence. Performing in a duo with the mellifluous but robust pianist Tim Lapthorn, she not only pulled off the difficult feat of making well-worn standards come up fresh ('All or Nothing at All' particularly vibrant; 'Get Out of Town' featuring a seldom heard introduction, and convincingly substituting sparky resilience for the resigned doominess of Ella Fitzgerald's version), but also showed off her perfect diction (and language skills) by singing in both Portuguese and Spanish. Leavened with just the right number of attractive originals – her album's title-track a moving evocation of a haven of tranquillity – this was an object lesson in how to handle a club date, informal but utterly professional, so that Mancio's and Lapthorn's considerable art, grace and vigour emerged entirely naturally and uncontrivedly from their faultless performance."
| 03/09/2006 Jim McElroy, JazzReview.com | "Peaceful Place is an album full of gentle surprises that will enchant and delight you. Mancio possesses one of the finest and most supple voices in jazz, she can sing just about any style and deliver it very convincingly, be it a standard or one of her own compositions.... The numbers "Too Close For Comfort", "Everybody's Song But My Own" and "Too Young to go Steady" let you hear the ease with which Ms Mancio delivers her own renditions of these songs; they flow and ebb seemingly at will. These are the kind of talents reserved for only a handful of singers......Georgia Mancio is a vocalist of the highest quality; her voice is a shining example of what jazz vocalists should strive to reach. She has a voice of timeless elegance that will only continue to enchant for years to come." | 17/01/2006 Steve Rubie, 606 Club | "Georgia Mancio is a marvellously talented award-winning singer who has been working on the Jazz scene for some years now. She has a lovely tone and direct style that lends itself perfectly to the Jazz and latin standards that she performs. It's a measure of her impressive ability that she recently won the Brussels International Young Jazz Singers' Award, beating 85 contestants from around the World. She, not surprisingly has a wonderful band....Promises to be a great, swinging set" | 01/11/2005 Peter Maguire, Global Jazz Scene | "Georgia has the full package: great voice; highly professional stage presence..and the rare ability to choose wonderful material" | 28/04/2004 Richard Godwin, The Evening Standard | "Sultry, breathy, Latin-tinged jazz from Georgia - one of the hottest singers on the circuit" | 01/02/2004 Claire Martin, Jazz Line-up BBC Radio 3 | "A singer that I've much admired over the years" |
