Reviews of thEROGINNISSZONE
10/03/2006 John Watson, Express & Star | Bass guitarist Roger Inniss has long been one of the most accomplished musicians on the Midland scene - as a sideman with singer Elkie Brooks; as the solid foundation of many outstanding bands and as a record producer in studios. But until recently Inniss has rarely enjoyed the public acclaim he deserves as a bandleader - and that is being put right with concerts by his group thEROGINNISSZONE, on tour to promote a new CD. Last night at Gumbles Jazz Club, held at Stafford's Prince of Wales pub, the band mixed soulful fusion grooves with fiery jazz solos - from trumpeter Bryan Corbett, tenor saxophonist Carlton Romillie and drummer Rod Youngs - to the delight of the crowd. They even managed a soulful groove on the jazz classic Take The A Train, composed by Billy Strayhorn for the Duke Ellington Orchestra in the 1940s. There are some excellent bass guitarists on the scene, but very few are as articulate and exciting in their soloing as Inniss - in his hands, it becomes a true front-line instrument, as he plucks, slaps and hammers the strings to create a whole sound-world. | 11/02/2006 Alison Vermee, Manager, The Edge Arts Centre, Much Wenloch | Roger Inniss makes an event out of any performance. The musicianship from the whole band is fantastic and Roger’s warm and welcoming stage presence creates a great ambience in which the audience relax and voice their appreciation very vocally! The whole evening here at The Edge was both warm and relaxing as well as exciting and stimulating. Roger is a great front man and is surrounded by musicians whose styles complement each other perfectly. | 28/09/2005 Peter Bacon, Birmingham Post | "...eclectic, expertly played and all with that warmth that Roger Inniss exudes and which enlivens whoever he happens to be playing with at the time ... Be there and you'll be smiling too." | 02/07/2005 James (via e-mail) | "I felt extremely uplifted by the gig!" | 29/06/2005 Tony Dudley-Evans, Birmingham Jazz & Cheltenham Jazz Festival | "I am delighted that Roger Inniss is now leading his own band and has made an excellent CD. But even more impressive is that the band is refreshingly different from other bands around and creates a great vibe through its use of very interesting material." | 09/02/2003 Pete Feenstra, Soundcheck Magazine, Live at the Torrington | "... the bass solo, when it came, was simply spellbinding, but subtle enough to carry the song on to an extra dimension ..." |
