Reviews of Java
01/02/2006 Steven Rosenberg - Just Jazz Guitar USA | "This effort from Englishman Jamie Taylor's Java quartet brings many differenet sounds and styles to the table. Dudu Pukwana's "Angel Nemali" stays true to the composer's South African vibe - ironic perhaps, coming from this group that hails from the North of England. The disc begins to excel with with Taylor's composition "Gospel Truth" - a straight-ahead workout that showcases the leader's Grant Green-ish bop chops. Yet another side of Jamie Taylor reveals itself with the solo acoustic work on both the title track and "Blue Moon". The complex fingerstyle arrangements verge on folk-style fingerpicking - but in a good way. Something original is going on here. If there's anything Taylor should do more of, this is it. "Anywhere But Here..." indeed offers something for everybody, and in this case, everything from one body, the very eclectic Jamie Taylor."
| 01/01/2005 Peter Martin - Jazz UK | "An enormously impressive debut from this quartet of Leeds College of Music graduates led by guitarist Jamie Taylor, who also wrote much of the material. Taylor's own playing is full of ideas with a strong sense of direction and in pianist Jamil Sheriff, he has a partner of comparable inventiveness. Bassist Garry Jackson and drummer Nick Smalley provide a firm foundation, with splashes of colour when required, and guest altoist Damian Cook makes a notable contribution." - Jazz UK, Jan '05
