Reviews of Craig Schneider
03/09/2007 Keith Ames, Musician Magazine | “Eight tracks of smooth, classic small band jazz from the fine London-based threesome of Craig, Jonty and Darryn in which they display collective skills in composition, improve and performance. Opening with the beautiful Wildflower, the blend of Craig’s melodic keyboard deftness and the fluid mix of Jonty’s double bass and Darryn’s skins immediately shows why they are rising stars in their chosen format. Craig’s original Tell Me Why opens up with a more considered, blues-orientated feel and allows the group to step out into more liberal, open territory via spacious soloing. This is a collective set that will generate many repeat plays, especially as a more enjoyable CD of trio jazz would be extremely hard to find.” | 31/05/2004 Australian Financial Review | Swing Still Works For Me. Craig Schneider (Newmarket) 6.5 stars: Schneider has fronted big bands for many years and it shows. This is a spirited and quite polished foray into the music of the middle of the 19th century (Caravan, Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens, Choo Choo Ch'Boogie, Jump, Jive An' Wail, Boogie bugle Boy, Come Fly with Me, and more) alongside a couple of genre-fitting own compositions, including the witty title track. Schneider's voice does the trick, and the sharp arrangements - delivered with zest and snap by the small-ish big band - proves he has absorbed the lessons of the era. A confident, happy and, of course, truly swinging album. |
